#31 - The Architecture of Ideas

I have recently been browsing through the eVolo website at http://www.evolo.us/

They describe themselves as follows:
“eVolo is an architecture and design journal focused on technological advances, sustainability, and innovative design for the 21st Century. Our objective is to promote and discuss the most avant-garde ideas generated in schools and professional studios around the world. It is a medium to explore the reality and future of design with up-to-date news, events, and projects.”

eVolo sponsors an annual skyscraper competition which focuses on novel materials, aesthetics, & spatial organizations in high-rise architecture. The submissions are always most interesting. There appear to be varying levels of architectural rigor applied to the proposals. Some of the entries seem to be somewhat over-optimistic in their statements of structure and systems performance. But all of that can be over-looked. The key concept is that novel ideas are attractively proposed and expressed.

It is not a natural law that high-rise architecture should be limited to tall shiny rectangles in city cores. In fact, there is evidence to suggest that the ‘traditional’ skyscraper designs are pathological to urban connectivity and human activity.*

A common element of many designs submitted to eVolo’s competitions is that buildings need to not only have a minimal environmental footprint, but should actually perform some kind of remediation. Many submittals are conceived as a direct response to specific environmental issues.

Structure designs that radically depart from the norm stimulate the inspiration of ideas. They also expand our notions of what a built environment can and should do. It is refreshing to browse the eVolvo website.

After browsing eVolo’s website, you might want to check out Nova’s website. We do not design buildings. We design and build analytical instrumentation.

We make gas analyzers for oxygen, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, and many other atmospheric gases. We provide gas analysers for syngas, landfill gas, purity gas, biogas, and others.

Give Mike or Dave at Nova a call, or send us an e-mail.
